Clipfinder 2.5 Help

What's new in Clipfinder 2.5

Clipfinder 2.5 beta 3

Compatibility with REDCINE-X build 183

This version is now compatible with REDCINE-X build 183 (where the name of the script menu has changed from "Run Script" to "Run Script...").

Scan and Edit Clips in Thumbnail View

You can now quickly scrub through a clip in thumbnail view:

Select the clip by clicking on it. The thumbnail is now marked with a yellow border.

When you move the mouse across the clip the thumbnail moves through the frames of the clip. The left hand side of the thumbnail corresponds to the in frame, the right hand side to the out frame.

You can freeze the thumbnail at the current frame by clicking on the thumbnail. This sets the poster frame and the current frame field in the RSX file.

A frozen thumbnail is indicated by a red border. To unfreeze the thumbnail, click on it again.

Changing look settings will immediately update the thumbnail, allowing you to grade clips in context.

You can also set and clear in-point, out-point and poster-point in thumbnail view:

Other changes

I have fixed a problem with retrieving timecode information from .mov files.

Clipfinder 2.5 beta 2

Copy RSX Data to Color Project

I have added a feature for copying the look settings from the RSX files to the RED tab in Apple Color.

Obviously, this works only for the basic settings available in the RED tab, e.g. not currently for FLUT, Shadow, Curves, etc. Use this as follows

- "send to Color" from FCP

- close Color

- in Clipfinder, select "Copy RSX Data to Color Project..." from Tools menu, navigate to Color project (there's no need to load clips in Clipfinder for this).

Basic EDL import

I have added support for basic EDL import (hard cuts only), see "Import from EDL" in File menu.

Since EDLs do not contain the full path to the R3D you need to run "replace MOV with R3D" after importing from an EDL.

Display of anamorphic clips

Clipfinder now detects R3D clips recorded in anamorphic mode and displays them correctly in the main window, the loupe window, thumbnails, project documentation and still frames.

In list or thumbnail view anamorphic clips are indicated by this status icon .

Entering annotations for multiple clips simultaneously

I have added support for entering annotations for multiple clips simultaneously.

Select multiple clips, then press the TAB-key to enter the first editable text field. Press the TAB-key again to move to the next editable field, press SHITFT-TAB to move to the previous editable field.

When you change the text in a field the new text is automatically copied to all selected clips.

If you have inadvertently overwritten a field you can restore the previous content by pressing CMD-Z (undo).

Setting and clearing the "good" flag

If the "good" flag is set, this is now also indicated by the following status icon

This makes it easier to find good takes in thumbnail view.

I have also added a keyboard shortcut for setting and clearing the "good" status on all selected clips simultaneously.

Press the G-key to toggle the "good" flag on and off.

Importing clips from text files via Drag & Drop

Dragging file names or clip names onto a Clipfinder document will now add the files or names to the document. You may need to run "replace MOV with R3D" to re-link from names that have no (or invalid) path information.

Changes to Drag & Drop mechanism

When "drag R3D instead of MOVs" is enabled, multiple R3Ds (_001,002, etc.) are now copied correctly.

To make Apple Numbers or text editors such as BBEdit accept text drags from Clipfinder, hold down the ALT-key from before you begin the drag until you have completed the drag.

Sequence Position field now set for all subclip import modes

Importing subclips from FCP XML files will now set "Sequence Position" for merge modes "all" and "none" (to the earliest position, if multiple cuts are merged)

Watch Folder

The watch folder setting must now be accessed through a disclosure triangle in the main window.

Monitor Folder

I have added a "monitor folder" setting. Use this to monitor rendering of clips via Apple Compressor, REDCINE-X, etc. The result of the monitor folder scan is dispalyed via these status icons

found match in monitor folder, but file is in use (potentially by other app)

found match in monitor folder, number of frames matches clip in Clipfinder document

found match in monitor folder, number of frames does not match (or file is not a movie file)

Reliability Improvements

I have fixed a long-standing problem which could crash Clipfinder when scrolling large lists or double-clicking in the list window.

I'm now retrying failed renders automatically, but only once and only if "skip existing" is not enabled.

I have resolved an issue where the list headings became invisible when the split bar was moved.

Cosmetic issues

I have fixed several cosmetic issues and redesigned the status icons. Here is what they mean

render failed

 render in progress

clip exists already (if "skip existing" is enabled)

 render complete

 render paused

 file not found

an RMD file exists for the clip

an RSX file exists for the clip

clip is a .mov file

clip is a RED clip

Clipfinder 2.5 beta 1

Improvements to FCP XML import

When you import subclips you now have 3 choices

- merge all: this will generate a single subclip for each clip (= file), extending from the earliest in-point to the latest out-point

- merge overlapping: this will merge subclips if in and out overlap

- merge none: this will create one subclip for each occurrence of a clip in the sequence

In the conform dialog, there is now an option to "Use only first 16 characters of file name in clip directories".

(see explanation below)

With these changes, the following workflow becomes possible:

- import subclips and select "merge all".

- render from Clipfinder directly or via REDcineX

- conform with the new option enabled

In both cases only the segment between the earliest in- and the latest out-point will be rendered in Clipfinder, REDCINE-X or ROCKETCINE-X.

If you are rendering in Clipfinder, the output file name may have the in- and out-point position appended to the base clip name. The new conform option lets you ignore the postfix.

While this is not as efficient as rendering only the used sections of a clip it has the advantage that I merely have to replace the original pathurl in the XML instead of creating a new pathurl for each subclip.

Peference setting for choosing color science

The preference settings for selecting the color science version have been rolled into one.

The default is "FLUT color science".

If you want to work with the original color science or the "new color science (2009), you need to change the setting in the preferences.

Clipfinder 2.5 beta 0

Send to REDCINE-X feature

Added commands to the Edit menu for sending clips to the REDCINE-X bin or timeline.

Note:

If you select "import subclips" and "merge none" (see below) when importing from an FCP XML, Clipfinder will populate the "Sequence Position" column with the clips' starting positions in the FCP sequence. You may need to make "Sequence Position" visible in the Preferences. Sorting on Sequence Position and sending to RCX will reconstruct the FCP timeline in RCX.

Context menu in list view

Added context menu (right mouse click) in List View that works on all selected clips and offers the following operations

- reveal in Finder

- delete RSX file

- delete proxy files

- remove in-/out-point

Import and Export of Clipfinder Preferences

Added Import/Export pane in the Preferences window. This allows you to export and import settings for

- custom clip names

- FCP field mapping

- Avid field mapping

- Render Presets.

Support for Apple Compressor transcoding

In a previous version I had already added a mechanism for transcoding via Apple Compressor (e.g. for 5D files).

Create a folder containing Compressor Droplets and configure the folder location in Clipfinder's preferences.

When you have loaded .MOV files (not R3D files), selecting clips and right-clicking will let you trigger a droplet for each selected clip.
